Asset Management X Fintech workshop in November 28th

How can blockchain transform the asset management industry?Mr Mamoru Tsuchiya, Executive Officer and Head of Blockchain Promotion at SBI Holdings was the perfect speaker to talk this through. We first heard from him about Corda distributed ledger technology (DLT) which underpins blockchain and about some use cases of a tokenized economy enabled by Corda. We also learned about FundAdminChain (FCA), a London-based start-up which attempts to disrupt fund transaction which currently involves many intermediaries and added cost. FCA aims to eliminate inefficiencies and frictions between the various players, tokenize all asset classes and reduce/visualise costs involved in flows. This is an initiative which we should keep an eye on.

Mr. Masayoshi Shoji, Director of FinTech Innovation Division, KPMG Japan Ltd. was the facilitator and also had a discussion. It is a blockchain technology that is already widely used in logistics, but what kind of utilization method is used in the asset management industry, and the case where overseas asset management start-up companies are actually using enterprise blockchain , We deepened discussions with the participants on how to utilize them in Japan and the issues of regulation.

  • 4th Assetmanagement X Fintech workshop in 31 October.

4th Assetmanagement X Fintech workshop in 31 October.

Our 4th workshop was coined “Fintech World Cup” as it was all about rugby in Japan at that time and we thought it would be great to have representatives of rugby nations to talk about fintech.
We had fintech companies from England and France, both of them providing alternative data.  Dr John Ricketts of SignificanceSystems spoke how its earth.ai model analyses social sentiment on the internet and can help buy/sell decisions for equities.
Alexis Berson of Kayrros introduced their solution which monitors and analyses satellite image of petrochemical assets helping energy traders but with potential wider usage of any investor with an interest in energy market movement.
This was followed by a group discussion involving representatives from rugby nation embassies (UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and Scottish Development International) who spoke about the ecosystem and latest trends of the fintech market in their countries/regions.
There was also an award of rugby shirt and rugby ball, courtesy to the Irish Embassy to our participants who asked the best questions.  We were delighted to host another world cup in Kabutocho.

3rd Asset management X Fintech workshop held in 26 September
    Date: 26 September (Thu)  16:00~18:00
Address : 6-5 Nihonbashi Kabutocho FinGATE KABUTO
We were honored to have Mr Yoshinori Nomura, an experienced Portfolio Manager at Simplex Asset Management to talk about “Challenge and vision in utilizing AI/ML in investment process and fund management” at our 3rd workshop.
He explained to us about the Technology Hype Cycle and that Japanese firms were unable to reap the benefits of some of the past hypes (eg HFT).  However for the current excitement in AI/ML , there are views that it might have hit the “Peak of inflated expectations” phase , entering the “Trough of disillusionment”.  The flipside of this is that it is not yet too late to invest to enjoy the later “slope of enlightenment”.  So what are the challenges facing the Japanese asset management industry in winning the fruit?  Mr Nomura stressed the need for transforming “people, IT and organization”.  The people angle is particularly important and he alluded to the requirement by Singaporean fund management executives to complete Python courses and a well known global hedge fund having 800 Data Scientists.
This might sound threatening and worrying  to Japanese asset management industry but he also mentioned that there are probably early career staff who can code but are simply not noticed by Top Management and that rather than fearing excessively about IT literary required to use AI/ML (it is possible to implement DL with 20 lines of coding)  firms should start developing staff and capability.

  • Asset Management X Fintech workshop (July 25)- key takeaways

Asset Management X Fintech workshop (July 25)- key takeaways

We held our first workshop (of a series of 6) on 25th July.  After JIAM Director Keiichi Aritomo presented on the broad picture of Japan’s asset management industry ecosystem, Satoshi Noguchi, CEO of Robot Funds gave us a demo of their solution to make fund reporting more customer friendly (timely reporting, smartphone-friendly user interface etc) using RPA, AI, cloud computing technology.  This demo led nicely to a very lively discussion with many industry experts and other start-ups to talk about the challenges the industry was facing and how they are addressed, drawing on some powerful real examples.

    Key takeaways:

There was resounding agreement across the floor that digitalisation of  the AM industry is a must.  Bottlenecks include; legacy systems, internal resistance, “because it has always been that way” mindset (and therefore not trying) – so is the enemy inside?

One way for a breakthrough is to work with start-ups to boost the speed  (in fact it is a must as technological change is so quick that anything developed inhouse could get quickly obsolete) and there are some really great start-ups in Tokyo.  Quote – “Speaking to some of the start-ups makes one feel more optimistic about the future of the financial services industry.”

We heard about some groundbreaking business examples by some of the start-up attendees and how they made the once impossible a possible.  Another great quote – “Open Innovation is very much about creating a safe sandbox but don’t wait for anyone to set up a sandbox for you. If you have a great idea, create your sandbox to trial it”

Our next workshop will be held on 29 August with Shota Ishii, CEO of SAPIAT as our guest speaker.
